11 VPN Services

This section offers step-by-step instructions for using FEAT VPN with a few VPN service providers. This involves downloading your VPN configuration from the VPN service, possibly modifying it a little, and loading the VPN configuration into FEAT VPN.

PrivateTunnel

  1. Go to http://www.privatetunnel.com and log in with your user name and password.
  2. Click on the My Account tab.
  3. In the section Download User Profile enter your password again and click on Download Profile. This downloads a self-contained VPN configuration file named client.ovpn.
  4. Copy the downloaded .ovpn file to your phone and load it on the tunnel edit screen.

StrongVPN

  1. Go to http://www.strongvpn.com and log in with your user name and password.
  2. Click on VPN Accounts Summary in the VPN Accounts section of the navigation bar on the left.
  3. Click on the view greeting link of the Open account that you would like to use FEAT VPN with.
  4. Click on the link under Your OpenVPN configuration files. This downloads a configuration ZIP archive.
  5. Copy the downloaded .zip file to your phone and load it on the tunnel edit screen.

WiTopia

  1. Go to http://www.witopia.net and click on the customer login button.
  2. Log in with your user name and password.
  3. Click on the Download Client Software link of the active service that you would like to use FEAT VPN with. This brings up a dialog box.
  4. In the dialog box, click on the ZIP File link under Download "raw" files. This downloads a configuration ZIP archive, which we will modify a little in the next steps.
  5. Go to https://www.witopia.net/?faq-item=openvpn-ssl-gateway-locations to see a list of OpenVPN servers provided by WiTopia. Note, for example, that they have a server in San Francisco, vpn.sfo.witopia.net.
  6. Unzip the downloaded .zip file. This will create a directory named personalVPN that contains, among other files, a file named SampleConfig.txt
  7. Edit SampleConfig.txt with a text editor. It contains a line similar to the following:
remote [REPLACE WITH SERVER NAME] 1194
Modify the line so that it contains one of the VPN servers provided by WiTopia. If you would like to use their server in San Francisco, for example, the line would look as follows:
    remote vpn.sfo.witopia.net 1194
  8. Save the modified SampleConfig.txt.
  9. Rename SampleConfig.txt to WiTopia.ovpn. FEAT VPN expects VPN configuration files to have names that end with .ovpn.
  10. Zip the personalVPN directory to create a new ZIP archive with the modified and renamed VPN configuration file.
  11. Copy this new .zip file to your phone and load it on the tunnel edit screen.

Update: We used to provide HMA configuration files for FEAT VPN here in this section. This is not necessary any longer. HMA now uses configuration files that can be loaded into FEAT VPN unmodified.

Just follow the following four simple steps to get up and running with HMA.

  1. Download the configuration ZIP archive vpn-config.zip, which contains .ovpn configuration files for all HMA VPN server locations, from the HMA website: http://hidemyass.com/vpn-config/vpn-config.zip
  2. Unzip the downloaded ZIP archive. This will create two subdirectories, TCP and UDP. The former subdirectory contains a UDP-based .ovpn configuration file for every VPN server location. The latter subdirectory has the corresponding TCP-based configurations. The HMA configurations seem to use port 53 for UDP and port 443 for TCP.
  3. Pick the VPN server and the protocol - UDP or TCP - that you would like to use with FEAT VPN and copy the corresponding .ovpn configuration file to your phone.
  4. Load the copied .ovpn configuration file on the tunnel edit screen.

HMA has illustrated step-by-step instructions for using FEAT VPN with their VPN service on their website: http://wiki.hidemyass.com/Tutorials:FeatVPN_OpenVPN_on_Android
